Enter your garden bed size and pick what you're growing — see exactly how many plants fit, your expected yield, and a watering guide.
Crops marked ☀️ match your selected sunlight — others may still grow but won't perform as well.
Spacing and yield figures are general averages for home gardens — actual results vary by variety, climate, and soil quality.
Garden Planner Calculator: Stop Guessing How Many Plants Fit
Planting too close together is one of the most common mistakes new gardeners make overcrowded plants compete for light, water, and nutrients, and end up producing less, not more. This calculator takes your garden bed size and the crops you want to grow, and works out exactly how many plants fit with proper spacing, what yield to expect, and whether your sunlight level suits what you’re planting.
How it works
Each crop has a recommended spacing between plants and between rows, based on standard home-gardening guidelines. The calculator divides your bed area between your selected crops, then fits as many plants as the spacing allows per row and across your available rows so you get a realistic plant count, not just raw square footage.
Why this matters (use cases)
- First-time gardeners planning a raised bed or backyard plot for the first time
- Deciding how many crops you can realistically fit before buying seeds or seedlings
- Checking whether a shady spot will support what you want to grow
- Estimating how much food a given bed size will actually produce
How to use this calculator properly
- Enter your garden bed’s length and width in feet
- Select how much sunlight your spot gets Full Sun, Partial Shade, or Full Shade
- Check the crops you want to grow (crops matching your sunlight are marked with )
- Click Calculate to see your plant count, expected yield, watering needs, and a sunlight-match note for each crop
Frequently asked questions
What if I want to grow a crop that doesn’t match my sunlight level?
You still can the calculator will flag it with a warning rather than blocking you. Many crops tolerate less-than-ideal light, just with reduced yield or slower growth. The warning just sets realistic expectations.
Why does the plant count seem lower than I expected?
Proper spacing matters more than cramming in extra plants. Overcrowded plants compete for nutrients, light, and airflow, which often means fewer and smaller yields overall compared to giving each plant its recommended space.
Can I grow multiple crops in the same bed?
Yes select as many crops as you like. The calculator splits your total bed area evenly between your selected crops as a planning estimate. For more deliberate layouts (e.g., more tomatoes and fewer herbs), plan separate sections using the calculator per crop and add the areas together.
Are the yield estimates guaranteed?
No yield depends heavily on variety, soil quality, weather, and care. These are general home-garden averages meant for rough planning, not a guarantee of harvest size.
Does this account for companion planting or crop rotation?
Not yet this version focuses on spacing, yield, and sunlight fit. Companion planting (which crops grow well together) and seasonal rotation are separate planning considerations worth researching for your specific crops.

This calculator provides general planning estimates only. Actual plant spacing, yield, and watering needs can vary based on variety, soil quality, climate, and care. For best results, also check seed packet instructions or consult a local gardening expert.
